to catalog the library and develop a system for checking out materials

Activities

-list all the materials currently in the Youth Pride library

-research possible systems for checking out materials (collateral, library cards...etc)

-find and tailor a system to suit the library's needs

-design and create a new sign for the library

Evidence

I created a master file of all the materials in the library and divided them into sections; GBLT guides and resources, fiction and entertainment, GBLT fiction...Once the file was complete, I was able to sort the books by subject and then catalog them by subject title, or author.

I found my studies in creative and digital art most useful for this objective; I found this particularly useful when designing my flyer and the sign for the library.

I developed a system for checking out materials which I have included here

Instructions For Checking Out A Book

  1. Once you have found an item that you would like to check out, please find a staff member. If you do are new to the center and do not know who is a staff, ask someone and they can direct you.

  2. You will need to sign your name, and give us a phone number where you can be reached.

  3. Our check out period is four weeks. If you have not returned the book, we will call you and you will be required to do so. If you are late, you will be required to leave some form of collateral with us to be able to check out a book again. If you do not return the volume, you will not be allowed to leave the center with a book again.

  4. You are always welcome to read at the library or anywhere in the space. If you take a book out of the library, please leave it on the table to the left of the couch in the back, unless you remember and return it to exactly where it was.

The book categories have all be assigned differently colored stickers which correspond to a topic. I have created a library key for the colors and letters on the stickers, so people using the library can navigate.

Original library sign

New library sign

I replaced the old library sign with one that I felt was more welcoming and inclusive. I downloaded pride signs from all over the GBLT spectrum and also some creative rainbow items like a multilayer rainbow cake and rainbow roses. I wanted to particularly stress the inclusiveness of the sign; I included pride and symbols from each area, including straight allies. I wrote the words "Welcome to the Youth Pride Library and covered them with glitter.

I also made another artistic sign with the same words that I hung over one of the bookshelves
